Battle of Salzburg - Move 12

Summary
As night falls all of 2 Austrian corps, except their artillery, are on rout. They are also on the wrong side of the river Salach and are moving away from their supports. It will take at least two days to rally them . Their artillery are on the opposite bank of the river and in danger of being captured.

The battle has proved a complete success for 11 Bavarian corps. They have held Salzburg and are available to move north and threaten the flank of the enemy position at Mattsee.


The Austrians suffered 4 cavalry and 1 infantry casualties.

The Bavarians has suffered 2 cavalry and 1 infantry casualties.

These are heavy cavalry casualties, and will result in a reduction in the class of both cavalry brigades

The Austrians are moving forward to take advantage of the enemy routs, but may not have sufficient time. The Bavarians have lost their cavalry and one infantry brigade, but the remainder is holding.

Summary
Poor dice throw for the cavalry melee has left the Bavarians in trouble. Their cavalry will Rout from the field with 4 casualties, and two infantry brigades are Shaken. The corps are in no condition to continue to advance and will be hard pressed to survive until nightfall.

General Wrede badly positioned to drive enemy back across the river, but has redeployed his corps to meet the new threat.

General Klenau must drive enemy cavalry back to advance

Both cavalry brigades have received casualties, but both remain formed.

Summary
The Bavarians are now ready to advance on Salzburg, but must first drive off the enemy cavalry. Their artillery miss, and as a Poor commander Klenau must use all of his remaining command points to change his orders to “Engage” so that he can charge the enemy cavalry.

Summary
The Austrians have crossed the river Salach and are formed ready for battle. The Bavarians have formed a new defence line facing the ford, but their cavalry are too close to the enemy and very vunerable.

Summary
Austrian infantry are crossing the river and providing their cavalry can hold will soon be ready to advance. Artillery on both sides are now in position to engage enemy cavalry. Time is running out for the Austrians if they are to hold the river line against the Bavarians.

1200 to 1300

General Wrede orders his corps to advance towards the bridge to contain the enemy bridgehead.

General Klenau must get his infantry over the ford and secure his bridge head

Summary
The Bavarian artillery is moving within range of the enemy cavalry holding the ford. Neither cavalry brigades want to risk a melee unless their artillery can cause casualties on the enemy first. Both artillery are being repositioned to fire on the enemy cavalry.

General Klenau must get his infantry over the ford and secure his bridge head

Summary
Now that it is obvious that the Austrians intend to cross by the ford, Klenau must get his infantry across the river whilst the cavalry are still able to hold it. Should the hussars be driven off the Austrian attack must fail.

General Klenau is committed to crossing the river Salach by the ford and must get his cavalry over before the enemy can move to prevent them crossing.

Orders – Move to Salzburg

11 Bavarian Corps

General Wrede can now see that the Austrians will cross by the ford to his left. He must redeploy his corps to counter this attempt.

Move reserve infantry forward to protect gunners

Move commander to central position


Austrian hussars have crossed the river and are supported by artillery

Summary
At this critical stage Klenau has only rolled a 2 with the average dice. He has moved the cavalry over the river, but has no more command points to bring up his infantry. A large gap is developing between elements of his corps which means the commander must use his precious command points to move within command radius of different brigades
